Why mould is so common in Berlin apartments

Mould is not a sign that you live badly. It is one of the most common problems in European homes: a large study of more than 7,000 homes across Europe, including Germany, found visible mould in about 14% of inspected homes

(AWMF guideline 2023, citing Norbäck et al. 2017).

Berlin apartments are especially prone to it:

  • Old buildings (Altbau): thick but cold outer walls and corners where warm, humid air condenses.

  • New windows in old walls: modern airtight windows keep moisture inside, so it settles on the coldest spot, usually right next to the window.

  • Long, damp winters: cooking, showering and drying laundry indoors add litres of moisture to the air every day.

  • Furniture against outer walls: wardrobes and beds block air circulation, and mould grows unseen behind them.

The result is the typical picture we see every week: black spots in window corners, along the frame, in room corners near the ceiling and on bathroom walls.

What's included

Every mould treatment follows the same three steps, and we bring all the mould products and paint.

  1. Clean and remove: we treat the affected spots with a professional mould remover, let it work, and wipe away the black mould.

  2. Dry: the surface must be fully dry before painting. If you book a cleaning at the same time, this happens while we clean the rest of your apartment.

  3. Seal with anti-mould paint: we cover the treated areas with a high-quality, stain-blocking anti-mould paint (Isolierfarbe). It stops dark marks from bleeding through and helps protect the surface against new mould.

Typical areas: window corners and frames, room corners near the ceiling, bathroom walls and ceilings, behind furniture on outer walls.

After the treatment: we give you simple ventilation tips to keep the mould from coming back.

How it works

Booking takes a few minutes on WhatsApp, and you get a fixed price before we come.

  1. Send photos: take 3 to 5 photos of the affected areas and send them to us on WhatsApp at +49 176 61054647, with your district and apartment size.

  2. Get your fixed quote: we reply with a clear price, usually within a few hours.

  3. Confirm your date: pick a date and time; we send a written confirmation and a payment link for the deposit.

  4. We treat it: our team cleans the mould, lets the surface dry and seals it with anti-mould paint, combined with your cleaning if booked.

  5. Before and after: on request, we send before/after photos, useful for your landlord or your handover.

Moving out? Combine it with your move-out cleaning/Deep Cleaning

Visible mould is one of the first things a landlord notices at handover. Treating it together with your move-out cleaning is the easiest way to hand over a clean, fresh-looking apartment.

  • One visit, one price: we clean the whole apartment and treat the mould on the same day.

  • No extra waiting: the treated areas dry while we clean, so it adds little time.

  • Better add-on price: from €149 instead of €199 standalone.

  • Proof for your handover: before/after photos on request.

Note: we cannot guarantee how your landlord will assess the apartment, but a clean, treated surface gives you the best starting point.

When our treatment is the right choice, and when it isn't

Our service is a cosmetic surface treatment for small to moderate mould. We are honest about what it can and cannot do.

A good fit for:

  • Black spots around windows, in corners or on bathroom walls

  • Surface mould caused by condensation and everyday humidity

  • Preparing an apartment for handover or a new tenancy

Not a replacement for professional mould remediation (Schimmelsanierung) when:

  • Large areas or several rooms are affected

  • The wall is wet, the plaster is crumbling, or wallpaper is coming off

  • The mould comes from a building defect, such as a leak, rising damp or a thermal bridge

  • Mould returns quickly after cleaning

In these cases the cause must be fixed, and as a tenant you should inform your landlord, who is responsible for building defects. The German Environment Agency explains causes and proper remediation in its mould guide (Ratgeber Schimmel im Haus). If your photos suggest a bigger problem, we will tell you honestly before booking.

FAQ

How much does mould treatment cost in Berlin? From €149 as an add-on to any BerlinCleaner cleaning, or from €199 as a standalone job. Larger areas are quoted from photos.

Will the mould come back? The anti-mould paint helps protect the treated surface, but mould needs moisture to grow. Regular airing (short, wide-open ventilation several times a day) and keeping furniture a few centimetres from outer walls make the biggest difference. If the cause is a building defect, it can return until that is fixed.

How long does the treatment take? The hands-on work for a few spots usually takes 1 to 2 hours, plus drying time. When combined with a cleaning, the drying happens while we clean.

Is the paint safe to use in my apartment? We use an interior anti-mould paint made for living spaces. (Check the tin: if it says water-based or low-odour, add that here.) We recommend airing the room well after the treatment.

Can you treat mould before my move-out inspection? Yes. This is one of our most common requests. Book it together with your move-out cleaning for the add-on price.

Do I need to tell my landlord? If the mould is caused by the building (for example damp walls or leaks), you should inform your landlord, who is responsible for fixing it. For small condensation spots, many tenants simply treat them, but when in doubt, check with your landlord or tenant association.

Do you bring the products? Yes, we bring all mould treatment products and the anti-mould pain
